Sounds of Faith

Sounds of Faith - Chicago

Watch the Sounds of Faith Chicago Concert Trailer

Sounds of Faith - Chicago was held on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Hyde Park’s own Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago and filmed in HD and broadcast on WTTW11 - PBS Chicago on April 4 and 8, 2010. This event brought together some of Chicagoland’s most recognizable performers in sacred music and recitation to expose all present to the sounds of traditions of which they may only have a passing knowledge.

Performed by leading Chicago practitioners, including Cantor Alberto Mizrahi, Amir Koushkani, the Salem Baptist Choir, and the Rockefeller Chapel Choir with University Organist Thomas Weisflog, this celebration of diverse sounds of faith was introduced by Bill Kurtis and filmed for a television broadcast special. It is our hope that this event, attended by more than 1000 people, will serve as an inspiration for dialogue and mutual understanding in Chicago, and future events in other cities.

Sounds of Faith - New York

Sounds of Faith - New York was a multi-faceted production celebrating the interconnection and diversity of sacred sound in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, performed by leading practitioners and artists in Manhattan’s historic Riverside Church. This program, which took place on Sunday, March 13, 2011, brought the Sounds of Faith paradigm into national focus. With its central commitment to social justice and intercultural relations, The Riverside Church welcomed an audience of nearly 1000 to the event.

As with Harran’s successful 2009 production Sounds of Faith - Chicago and the subsequent student-organized 2010 Sounds of Faith - Miami, the event yielded a concert film, to be broadcast on PBS stations, excerpted in podcasts, and selected footage in the international Sounds of Faith documentary project. The goal of Sounds of Faith - New York is to bring about a more educated, responsible and mutual understanding between Abrahamic faith communities in Manhattan and across the country. With the recent Park51 controversy and upcoming 9/11 anniversary, the need is urgent for such a program rooted in respect, reason and healing.
